System Operator
What do they do?
The System Operator controls the stream of electricity, monitors voltage transformers, operates circuit breakers, records readings from a map board, communicates with power plant operators and energy traders, and foresees the need for power changes for certain weather conditions. According to the BLS, a systems operator may also operate machinery that increases and decreases voltage. The job may require sitting or standing in a control room. According to the BLS, the work is not physically demanding, but it does require continuous attention.

Training
This position requires journey level experience. Utility companies provide on-going training for journey level workers to keep employees current on new equipment, procedures and safety.
